New help for
Parkinson’s
patients
LIVING
with Parkinson’s dis-
ease is a challenge. Daily activities
that once seemed natural may now
be daunting. Gritman Therapy Solu-
tions now offers physical therapy
designed to help those who experi-
ence hypokinesis (slow movement)
or bradykinesia (an impaired ability
to adjust the body’s position). Based
on the principals of the Lee Silver-
man Voice Treatment (LSVT), LSVT
BIG is a research-based physical
therapy program that was developed
using clinically proven methods to
increase an individual’s mobility.
LSVT BIG is a standardized
treatment protocol that consists of
16 sessions—four days a week for
four weeks. Benefits of LSVT BIG
include improved walking speed
with bigger steps, improved bal-
ance and improved trunk rotation.
The program is most beneficial for
patients who are in the early stages
of their diagnosis.
“People with Parkinson’s often
think they are making their nor-
mal movements, but in reality they
are making smaller, slower ones,”
says LSVT BIG-certified physical
therapist Angela Anderson. “Our
program helps improve quality of
life by making it easier to accomplish
everyday tasks that most people take
for granted.”
Physical therapy using the LSVT
BIG methods can be tailored to
the specific needs of each patient.
Therapy can help with functional
tasks such as turning, walking to
chairs and sitting, and getting in and
out of bed, as well as help increase
overall strength and endurance.
